[NEWS] Kwon Sang Woo talks about liver surgery and late father’s battle with cancer
Actor Kwon Sang Woo shared his experience undergoing surgery for a liver hemangioma for the first time.
On the 20th, Kwon Sang-woo appeared on the YouTube channel ‘Jjan-han hyung Shin Dong Yup‘ alongside his ‘Hitman 2’ co-stars Lee Yi-kyung and Hwang Woo Seul-hye.
During the show, Lee Yi-kyung, while taking a hangover remedy, asked Shin Dong-yup, “Brother Shin Dong-yup, are you someone who doesn’t get hangovers?” To which Shin Dong-yup replied, “I don’t.”
Kwon Sang-woo then joined the conversation, saying, “I used to vomit when I drank alcohol, but I stopped after I started liking alcohol.” He continued, “This is the first time I’m sharing this, but the reason ‘Hitman 2’ feels like it has two parts is that I discovered I had a liver hemangioma during my annual comprehensive health checkup.”
He further explained, “My father passed away early from liver cancer. The doctor told me, ‘If the hemangioma grows over 10 cm, we’ll need to perform a major surgery, so remove it once it reaches 6 cm if your schedule allows.’ My family was in the US, so I didn’t make a big deal out of it and had the surgery on my own before ‘Hitman 2.’ The doctor showed me a picture of my liver and said they removed a piece the size of a palm.” This revelation surprised everyone.
Kwon Sang-woo added, “The doctor also mentioned that my liver was unusually large, saying, ‘Even if we remove 30%, it’s still the size of a normal person’s liver.’ I was in the hospital for quite some time, but with my family abroad, I felt very lonely.”
He concluded by saying, “I started filming ‘Hitman 2’ right after recovering.” Lee Yi-kyung, who was hearing this story for the first time, praised Kwon Sang-woo, saying, “He must have been exhausted, but he still gave everything he had during filming.”

Actor Kwon Sang-woo, who will soon meet audiences with “Hitman 2,” expressed his desire to turn this action-comedy flick into a long-running series and remain an action movie star for a long time, like his idol Jackie Chan.
“If given the opportunity, I hope ‘Hitman 2’ will surpass the breakeven point, receive much love and become a growing series,” Kwon told The Korea Times at a cafe in Seoul, Thursday. “If this series could gradually climb the box office ladder, step by step, it would bring me an even greater sense of accomplishment.”
“Hitman 2,” set for theatrical release on Jan. 22, is a comic action film where Jun (Kwon), a former secret agent who lives as a cartoonist hiding his past, is framed for a terrorist attack that mimics his newly released comic.
The film follows the success of its predecessor, released in January 2020, and was especially hailed for the good chemistry between the ensemble, namely Kwon and other lead actors Jung Joon-ho and Lee Yi-kyung. However, despite the positive reviews, the first installment of the franchise recorded around 2.4 million admissions due to the impact of the pandemic.
“The first film was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic immediately after its release. Still, there was a lot of positive feedback from those who watched the movie on other platforms later,” Kwon said. “That’s why it felt more regrettable. I thought if the timing had been better, we could have achieved a better box office score and I want to wash away the disappointment I had from the first one through the sequel.”
Despite declining theater attendance, Kwon remains resolute to have a presence in commercial films that draw substantial audiences, even if they aren’t blockbusters.
